What is art?

Art is the expression of human emotion, imagination, and experience, capturing what words cannot. It is a form of human communication that conveys emotions, ideas, and perspectives beyond language. Art serves as a bridge between the artist and the viewer, allowing for connection, interpretation, and reflection. It mirrors culture and society, documenting history, challenging norms, and revealing both collective and individual identities. Beyond its cultural and communicative roles, art carries aesthetic value, it moves us through beauty, creativity, and emotion. Over time, the definition of art has evolved, from emphasizing skill and beauty to embracing concept and intention. In modern and contemporary art, the idea behind the work can be just as meaningful as the piece itself. Ultimately, art is deeply personal: it is anything that inspires thought, evokes feeling, or transforms the way we see the world.

Artist Statement

From as early as I can remember, I was drawn to performance, costume, and creating visual worlds. Growing up, I was always drawing, sculpting with clay, and inventing shows with friends. I attended the Music Academy at Hamilton High, where I studied singing, acting, dance, photography, drawing, and painting. During summers, I went to art camps including Idyllwild Arts and Otis Summer Programs, and eventually went on to art school first at California College of the Arts, where I studied Fashion Design and later Photography.

I continued my studies at Otis College of Art and Design, where I deepened my focus on photography while exploring fashion, design, and landscape. There, I began creating staged photographs that brought all my interests together. I often serve as my own model, designing costumes and building sets to tell personal, imagined, and inherited stories. Making art this way feels natural to me; it’s how I understand myself and the world around me.

I am a Los Angeles based artist and educator whose work explores themes of loss, memory, and human connection through photography and mixed media. My practice moves between visual art, performance, and fashion design. I have experimented with a wide range of photographic styles, including portraiture, couture, urban landscape, animal photography, and journalism.

In 2019, I began a self-portrait series titled Housewife, inspired by my late grandmother. I photographed myself wearing her clothing and imagined the rhythms of her daily life. As I worked, I realized the images held both grief and reflection. They began as a way to feel close to her, but ultimately led me toward telling my own story.

My next series, Loss of a Loved One, explored memories of trauma and the emotional landscapes that linger long after an event. I staged scenes by projecting photographs I had taken onto walls, then placed myself within them using props and costumes. This process allowed the images to resemble memory, layered, blurred, emotional, rather than a literal record.

My solo exhibition The Loss of a Loved One (2021, Otis College of Art & Design) reflected deeply personal narratives of grief and healing. I have also participated in group exhibitions including In Conclusion (2020, Otis College of Art & Design), Last Night I Dreamed Somebody Loved Me (2020, Bolsky Gallery), and Photo L.A. (2020), where I exhibited six photographs as part of the Otis booth.

My photographic work has been featured in The Argonaut Local News & Culture (2024), Shoutout LA (2021), Voyage Magazine (2021), and Intima Magazine (2021). Additional credits include photo features in Global Traveler, OK! Magazine, STAR Magazine, and Radar Online, with published portraits of public figures such as Kris James.

In addition to my art practice, I teach as a Maker’s Space Art Teacher at McKinley Elementary School (2024–present), where I develop and lead creative lessons for students in grades K–5. I also teach woodworking and sustainable artmaking at reDiscover Center (2020–present), encouraging hands-on creativity through design and reuse.

Beyond the classroom, I continue to work professionally as a photographer, creating portraits, editorial shoots, and commissioned works that merge technical skill with emotional storytelling. I have also acted in several short films and worked as an on-set photographer. Recently, I’ve been doing paid photo shoots and continue to explore new methods of image-making, always seeking innovative ways to merge memory, narrative, and identity.

For the past three years, my energies have been primarily focused on art education. I’ve been working as an art teacher while earning my Single Subject Credential in Art from Cal State Long Beach, which has deepened my passion for connecting creativity and community through teaching and artmaking. Collaboration and experimentation are at the heart of my practice, and I am excited for the many directions my work may continue to grow.
